If you have gonorrhea or chlamydia:
Get Treated
Many people with chlamydia or gonorrhea never have symptoms. Treatment is important even if everything seems normal because your infection can lead to problems.
Why?
In women, untreated gonorrhea or chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the womb) or long term abdominal pain. Pregnant women with gonorrhea or chlamydia can pass the infection to the baby which may cause blindness.
In men, untreated gonorrhea or chlamydia can cause severe pain near the testicles or infertility.
Untreated gonorrhea or chlamydia may increase chances of getting HIV. In some instances, untreated gonorrhea can lead to a life threatening condition in which gonorrhea spreads to blood or joints.

Tell Your Partner
Partner treatment is very important for the health of your partners and to protect you from getting infected again. Most people with an infection are unaware that they have one, but the infection can still be causing harm with long term complications.
Why should I talk to my partners?
Partner treatment is very important for the health of your partners and to protect you from getting infected again. Many people infected with chlamydia or gonorrhea are unaware of their infection because there are no symptoms. However, the infection can still cause long term complications.
Telling your sexual partner about your positive STD test is important. It helps your partner get tested and treated. Untreated STDs can lead to many illnesses. Untreated gonorrhea or chlamydia may also increase chances of getting HIV. In some instances untreated gonorrhea can lead to a life threatening condition in which gonorrhea spreads to blood or joints.
How do I talk to my partners?
You can talk to your partners or we can contact your partners for you, if you provide: 1. your partner’s name, 2. partner’s cell number or email at this link. Your name will not be mentioned during notification.
- Being diagnosed with an STD can cause many emotions. You may even begin to question your trust in your partner or be worried that they will question their trust in you. Before you blame anyone, keep in mind that STDs are common and don’t always cause symptoms. It is possible that you or your partner got the STD in a previous relationship without even knowing it.
- The most important thing to remember is that you and your partner both need to receive medical care as soon as possible.
- Talk to your partner as soon as possible. Be honest and straightforward . Remember that your partner may have many emotions too.
- The most helpful thing you can do is listen to your partner’s concerns and fears and offer information about the STD and its symptoms. Give your partner time to absorb this information. Help your partner understand that they may have the STD, and that they could have had it first, or you may have had it first. Sometimes, no one knows for sure.
- Make sure you take all of your medication exactly as your doctor prescribes and make sure your partners finish their medication before you have sex with them.
- It may be emotionally uncomfortable, but telling partners about STDs is the right thing to do. If you think you have an STD or you have questions about STDs, talk to a doctor, sexual health clinic, or student health center.
If you cannot talk to your partners, we can notify them so they can get treated. See “Partner Notification & Treatment Options”
