Welcome to the Training & Capacity Building page of Louisiana’s STI/HIV/Hepatitis Program.

We offer the following trainings listed below. Click the training link to learn more.

Counseling and Testing Training
Clinical Training for Rapid Testing

U=U Training

Introduction to CT Training:

HIV Prevention Counseling and Rapid Testing is based on models developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for administering rapid tests and risk reduction counseling to clients. These skills empower clients to assess their readiness for results and their own risk behaviors, and to develop a realistic and incremental plan for behavior change.

Intended audience: All staff (including medical personnel) and volunteers of community-based organizations who currently implement or plan to implement rapid HIV testing at their facility.

Steps toward certification as an HIV Prevention Counselor:
On the last day of training you will take a written test on the training’s content. Once the written test is passed you must be observed conducting a counseling session and administering an HIV rapid test in order to complete your certification. Contact the SHHP Regional Coordinator for your area to schedule an observation once you have passed the test.

NOTE:
If you fail either the written test or the counselor observation twice, you must repeat the certification process starting with this training.

Questions? Email Chivas.Michael@la.gov

NOTE: We are returning to in-person training beginning in May of 2024. The dates below reflect the location of each in-person training for 2025.

CT Training 2025 Dates:

9am – 4pm each day

Clinical Training for Rapid Testing

Clinical Training for Rapid Testing is a 4-hour training for medical professionals only. This training will cover the basics of rapid testing for HIV, HCV, and syphilis. This training is a condensed version of the CT Training (listed above). Beginning July 1, Clinical Training will be held 2 times a month, on the first Friday and third Thursday (with the exception of September, and November – no Thursdays). They will remain virtual and follow a schedule of 9a-11a, lunch break 11a-12noon, then continue from 12noon-2pm. Participants must be present, with their cameras on for the entire 4 hours of training. We will have a minimum attendance/registration requirement of 4 people. This 4 person minimum is the combined total of ALL registrants from all organizations, not the number your organization must register alone. If the minimum is not reached the registered participants will need to be rescheduled. We will cover all technologies needed for those registered.

Introduction to U=U Training

SHHP is pleased to provide a two hour virtual ‘U=U’ training for individuals who would like to learn about the Undetectable=Untransmittable science, the grass roots movement, and its importance for those living with HIV. People living with HIV who have an undetectable viral load for at least 6 months and take their medicine as prescribed CANNOT pass HIV on to sexual partners. The U=U movement is critical to reduce stigma in our communities and highlight hope. We hope that you can join us, please sign up and register for one of the dates below. Please send any questions to: Chivas.Michael@la.gov

2025 Dates:
